Zamboanga City Mayor Embraces Sustainability (and a Mangrove Tree) in Mayors’ Challenge!

Mayor Climaco of Zamboanga City gives us a tour of Santa Cruz Island, famous for its pink sand beaches and century-old mangrove tree. As a protected area frequented by tourists, human activities on the island are strictly regulated to preserve marine life (SDG 14) and life on land (SDG 15). Because urban sustainability goes beyond the city proper, conservation of the island and its resources is a top priority of Zamboanga City.

Localizing Marine Litter Actions: An experience-based guide for city or municipal-level localization of the Philippines National Plan of Action on Marine Litter

Aligned with the planning process of local government units (LGUs), it captures the process of developing the City Plan of Action on Marine Litter (CPOA-ML) from creating the planning team, situational analysis and baselining, visioning, capacity development, action identification, until approval and adoption. It provides recommendations for enhancements of existing local policies and mainstreaming into other local plans.

People’s Process in Community-based Plastics Circularity Social Enterprise Development

Developed under the Healthy Oceans and Clean Cities Initiative, this paper looks at how the People’s Process became a significant driver for community-based plastics circularity social enterprise development. It has specifically looked at organizations in HOCCI’s partner cities of Manila, Calapan, Davao, Legazpi, Cagayan de Oro, and Ormoc.
