Road to Resiliency and Beyond: Leveraging BCRUPD Project Gains and Knowledge for Resilient Human Settlements and Urban Development

Culminating five years of Building Climate Resiliency through Urban Plans and Designs, UN-Habitat Philippines led the launch of three knowledge products that encapsulate lessons and experiences from national and local capacity development and supporting government institutions in plans and policy formulation for sustainable human settlements and urban development.

BCRUPD a capacity building project funded by the German government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI), UN-Habitat gathered partners and key stakeholders in “Road to Resiliency: Leveraging BCRUPD Project Gains and Knowledge for Resilient Human Settlements and Urban Development,” on December 15, 2022 at Astoria Plaza, Pasig City.

The event aimed to present overall project accomplishments and strategic directions, and launch key knowledge products, and exchange inputs on how we can leverage on the partnerships and achievements of BCRUPD to promote climate resilient human settlements.

Among the key partners who attended the event were Hon. Anke Reiffenstuel, German Ambassador to the Philippines, who expressed her continuous support to climate programs in the country, saying that German-Philippine partnership is important for achieving global climate actions.

Undersecretary Henry Yap of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development emphasized his gratitude to UN-Habitat and the German government’s International Climate Initiative for being a valuable of the agency in building climate resilience for the country.

Reiffenstuel and Yap were presented with the knowledge products together with members of the Project Steering Committee, namely the Climate Change Commission, Department of the Interior and Local Government, National Economic Development Authority, and League of Cities of the Philippines.  

The three knowledge products, presented by UN-Habitat Country Programe Manager Christopher Rollo, UN-Habitat Regional Climate Change Technical Advisor Laids Mias-Cea, and BCRUPD National Project Coordinator and Reinero Flores, were:

  • Path to Climate Resiliency: Case Studies of Philippine Cities –  A compilation of cases from the cities of Angeles, Cagayan de Oro, Legzapi, Ormoc, and Tagum on crafting plans and programs for citywide climate adaptation strategies
  • Resilient and Green Human Settlements Framework  – A milestone policy framework that can serve as guide for national and local urban actors on resilience-driven green development for human settlements
  • Urban Planning and Design for Climate Resilience: A Reference Tool for Local Governments and Planning Actors in the Philippines  – a tool that provides a platform to equip users with concepts and technical information on urban planning and design or climate resilience
