Often discriminated for their distinct way of life, the Sama Bajau, a nomadic sea-based indigenous people found mostly in Mindanao, survive by relying on their close-knit community structure, living in groups of settlements consisting of make-shift stilt houses. But this also makes it more difficult for them to access basic services like education, healthcare and sanitation facilities.
Moreover, the adverse conditions experienced by the Sama Bajau community make them disproportionately vulnerable to various risks.
In 2021, Typhoon Rai caused massive damage to infrastructures and livelihoods in Surigao City, including the stilt villages of the Sama Bajaus.
In response, the AECID-funded ‘Huy-anan nan Bajau sa Surigao’ project was launched, implemented by UN-Habitat Philippines, together with the local government of Surigao City and other project partners.
This changed everything for the Sama Bajau community in Surigao City.
