Progress Against Global Goals Under Spotlight at Upcoming World Urban Forum

As the first major conference after adoption of the New Urban Agenda in 2016, the World Urban Forum is a chance to take stock of progress and direction towards sustainable urban development and to discuss the global goals through an urban lens. The Ninth session of the biennial event will take place in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur from 7 to 13 February 2018 and is expected to host in the region of 20,000 people.

Barely three weeks into her new position, for the new Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, it is also a chance to meet key partners, colleagues and friends of the organization as well as welcome the global urban development community to her home country, Malaysia.

Speaking about the event, Ms. Maimunah Mohd Sharif said: “With its genuine openness and inclusive nature, the World Urban Forum is unique on the United Nations conference circuit. It is a chance for stakeholders from all over the world – from ministers, local government and urban planners, to civil society groups, the private sector, academia and the media – to contribute to the global conversation about our cities and human settlements.

“It is a platform where people from all walks of life share their experience of finding homes, jobs and lives in urban spaces around the world and a chance for some of the world’s most marginalized to highlight their experiences in being denied some of the advantages cities pose,” Ms Sharif
said.

The World Urban Forum is the world’s premier conference on sustainable urban development, held every two years in different parts of the world. The schedule features more than 500 partner events as well as high-level, Ministerial and Mayoral dialogues and roundtables and a special series of
stakeholder meetings contributing recommendations to the New Urban Agenda implementation process.

High-level Assemblies for Women, Children and Youth and the Global Business Community will also be held as part of the proceedings.

The World Urban Forum will take place from 7-13 February 2018 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia.

Journalists wishing to attend the World Urban Forum should register on site at the KLCC from 5 February onwards with their press card or press association ID AND a corresponding national ID or passport.
